good weather for a walk

Thank you for joining us for the 6th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk. The weather was ideal, and we're glad you could share it with us. Sunny with a breeze. Not too warm or too cool...

We welcomed approximately 150 walkers this year, including a couple in wheel chairs, strollers and wagons. Even had three dogs along for the two mile hike, including a pug who went along for the ride in a stroller.

The lunch provided by Catholic Financial Life Branches 40 and 272 was delicious as ever and everyone got their fill with plenty left over.

The mass by Father Kevin was inspiring and well-attended. He made several mentions of the poor in his sermon and throughout the service, including a reference to Pope Francis and St. Vincent de Paul, who's feast day was Friday. The short Gospel reading about Lazarus and the rich man lent itself well to discussions of the poor.

A silent auction table was new this year and seemed to do well. We had about a dozen things to bid on and everything received at least one bid.

Thanks to Cynthia at the rummage sale we were able to procure some sidewalk chalk for the "footprints" near the Vercelli House and church. It was a lot of fun doing it, and last night's rain washed it all away.

Every year the walk gains more support than the previous. Through sponsorship and partnership, donations and pledges we're able to provide an acceptable level of support to the less fortunate and unemployed in the area. We are eternally grateful.

Special thanks to Ruth Anne, who's birthday coincided with the walk, for the many days and weeks spent organizing this the last six years. Happy Birthday!
